Owner Surrenders

The Snake River Animal Shelter (SRAS) is a no-kill, non-profit shelter that specializes in rehoming pets surrendered by their owners.

We treat both the owner and pet(s) with kindness and compassion. We recognize that circumstances beyond your control can occur and force you to find a new home for your pet(s).

Our team treats every pet in our care like our own and provide love and quality care during their stay.

We do not take walk-in surrenders. If you need to surrender your pet, please follow the process below:

1. Please call us at 208-523-4219 or visit our shelter to put your pet on our Surrender List. Once on this list, we encourage you to use our free Home to Home rehoming pet service while you wait for us to get your pet into the facility. We only take surrender information in person or on the phone (not through social media channels).

2. If you are surrendering a pet that was adopted from another shelter within two hours of our location, please contact that shelter to return the pet. We can only put you on our waitlist if we have verification that the shelter will not take the pet back. That verification can be sent to kenneltech@snakeriveranimalshelter.org and must include your full name, phone number, and the pet’s name. We may still not take the pet in if your adoption contract with the other shelter says that they will take returns of their adopted pets.

3. Our staff will call you to schedule an appointment to surrender your pet when we have space. You will be sent an online Surrender Form that must be completed prior to entry. We can estimate the wait time for entry. Pets that are already spayed / neutered enter the facility more quickly.

4. You will bring your pet on a leash (dog) or in a carrier (cat) to your surrender appointment. We will be happy to accept gently used toys, food, and treats at this time. If your pet is on medication that you’ve notified us about in advance, please bring it with you. Bring any vet records and/or microchip information with you.

5. During this appointment, your pet will be evaluated for human aggression behavior. We have the right to refuse any animal we do not see fit as an adoptable animal and to utilize vet records that we obtain to help make our decision. All animals must pass our evaluation before we will accept them. We can rarely accept sick, injured, pets with significant ongoing medical treatment, or dangerous animals due to capacity for care
